The paper discusses how an organization's direction is built around the connection between the organizational structure, organizational design, and the organizational functions. The paper focuses on the McMillion Company and contrasts its organizational structure with those in parallel companies. The paper examines its functions and design to show that this company's current organizational structure is optimal for growth in the current climate.

From the Paper:

"Companies are typically structuredvertically or horizontally. Additionally, organizations have been known to start with a vertical structure only to shift to a horizontal structure. The horizontal structure refers to one that is departmentalized, in other words, divided into smaller departments (Bateman & Snell, 2011). When organizations becomes more complex, horizontal structuring is often necessary. Rapid organizational growth canset the demand for the change in structure, causing additional complexity. The growth might be attributed to an expanded customer base, geographical area, product line, number of trade channels with which the company does business, or any of the above in combination. McMillion Companywas structuredvertically in the beginning, but currently operates within a horizontal structure. The demands of the industry and forMcMillion Company to communicate a unified brand across its customer base lead the reasons why McMillion transitioned from a vertical structure to a horizontal organizational structure. Contrasting examples are Marriot International and Harley-Davidson company. Marriott International originally operated as a root beer stand (Bateman & Snell, 2011)."
