Description:

This paper charts the history, business methods and marketing techniques of Orbitz Worldwide, a leading online travel agency. The paper describes the online travel industry, especially consumer behavior and finds little difference in the services and search options offered by Orbitz and the older leading competitive sites, Expedia and Travelocity. The paper contends that, although Orbitz has had five different owners in the past seven years, it has successfully followed the same business model. This indicates that a robust business and revenue model is the most important aspect of beginning an e-commerce company.

From the Paper:

"Currently, Orbitz is the number two online discount travel provider, behind long-time number one rival Expedia. Despite diversity and the fact that Orbitz has just recently traded hands for the fifth time, they are showing continued growth. Between 2006 and 2007, Orbitz increased annual revenue by 12% and, between 2004 and 2007, the increase was 24%. In terms of future plans, current CEO Steven Barnhart explains that Orbitz will continue to offer a more diverse set of services and goods. He plans on adding the availability of concert and event tickets to pull in a broader customer base."
