This paper explains that, most often, fresh college graduates possess the technical skills to get a job but lack the ability to be a winning negotiator. Using the principles developed by Roger Fisher and William Ury, the author relates his success in convincing the manager of an IT organization to present him with a better employment offer. The paper concludes that people need not to be born a leader or a strong negotiator, but rather they need to browse through the available literature to understand and apply several simple techniques to better manage situations to their own benefit.

From the Paper:

"As I was saying the words, I regained my confidence and commenced to present my point of view. I argued that a young individual starting out today is in need of more financial resources in order for him to be able to live a decent life and be content on the job. Salary is a large portion of employee satisfaction, and employee on the job satisfaction is a large portion of employee performances and as such organizational results. The manager smiled and asked what salary would make me content, and I responded that a 20 per cent increase form the current proposition would be a good start. He argued that 20 per cent was a bit over the budget allocated for the position, but that he could offer an additional 10 per cent.
"I made a pause to think it through and I then proposed that if I accept this new offer - which was still lower than the one at the dairy company - I would like it if the salary renegotiation was moved up so that I could accomplish my financial goal."
