Description:
The paper describes Michael Kohlhaas' quest for justice and analyzes both Kohlhaas' actions under these extraordinary circumstances, as well as at the general description of his character. The paper briefly discusses whether the acts against him are just and explains why Kohlhaas' forceful and violent revolt against the existing framework is not just. The paper concludes that his actions should have taken his protest in a legal manner through other judicial bodies of medieval Germany, including up to the Elector of Saxony or the Emperor himself.
From the Paper:
"The storyline of the novella describes the life and actions of Michael Kohlhaas in his quest for justice. Kohlhaas is a horse-dealer who attempts to sell his horses at the fair in Leipzig, only to be stopped on his way in Saxony by an official of Junker Wenzel von Tronka, who confiscates his horses under the pretext of not having the appropriate transit papers (Kohlhaas is from Brandenburg). This act triggers the quest for justice from Kohlhaas, as he seeks to gain back his horses in the civil courts of Saxony and, when this proves impossible, through violence and force."In order to answer where Kohlhaas is a just man, one needs to look at both Kohlhaas's actions under these extraordinary circumstances, as well as at the general description of his character. The latter is easier to address, as Kleist mentions it from the very beginning of the novella, in an introductory paragraph that contains information on the main character. As such, we learn that Kohlhaas is "one of the most upright" and, "up to his thirtieth year (...) the model of a good citizen" (Kleist, 1808)."
