This paper explains that a long term care facility, often called a nursing home, can provide both long term care for the elderly or medically fragile and short term rehabilitation care after an illness, injury or surgery. Next, the author relates how the increased support for homecare and assisted living facilities are competing with these long term care facilities. The paper recommends that nursing homes become skilled nursing care facilities, perhaps specializing in such areas as care of Alzheimer's patients and end-of-life hospice care.

From the Paper:

"Home delivered meals are a popular service for those unable to cook nutritious meals. Alert alarms that call directly to the hospital if something happens is now a very helpful resource for the elderly living alone since this provides them a sense of security. Agencies are now available to add special equipment such as adaptive tubs, grab bars and railings in homes of the elderly. Motorized scooters and senior adapted apartments are designed to make them more mobile. There is transportation provided in most communities at low cost for the elderly or handicapped."
