Description:

The paper relates that the number of Hispanics living in New Jersey will exceed the black population in two years according to the U.S. census Bureau. The paper reveals that in Trenton, NJ 22% of the population is Hispanic ("Trenton(city), New Jersey", 2000), and at this growth rate, the Hispanic population in New Jersey will be the largest minority group in the state by the end of 2008. The paper explains that there was a high rate of Hispanic immigration in the 1990s that is responsible for the population shift, and the shift was predicted, but not at the speed in which it occurred (Symons, 2000). New Jersey has always viewed itself as an immigration gateway so cities like Trenton are not surprised the change in demographics. The paper notes that people of Caribbean, Central America and South America are grouped under the umbrella of Hispanic by the U.S. Census Bureau, and according to the Census Bureau there are 126 racial and ethnic combinations of Hispanic (Symons, 2000).
