The paper explains that neutron generators involve the use of americium-243 radioactive isotopes, and these isotopes pose the major health concern of tumors from the ionizing radiation on bone surfaces and in the liver. This paper analyzes the many precautions that are necessary for those who assemble and for those who use neutron generators.

Precautions when Assembling a Neutron Generator
Precautions when Using the Neutron Generator

From the Paper:

"During the operation of neutron generators, a certain amount of radioactive waste will always be accumulated and disposal must be in accordance with the regulations and in the appropriate marked and labeled containers. The waste containers should be marked "Only trained operators who are under the direction of the RSO and are trained in Safe handling of radioactive materials shall use the equipment. All of these operators must have passed the Radiation safety test of the organization the neutron generator is available.
"Operators of the equipment should not stand unnecessarily close to the equipment, especially the cave entrance for the insertion of material. This is because good radiation safety always begins with concentrating on maintaining maximum distance from direct exposure to sources, and always operating the equipment with speed and efficiency so as to reduce exposure time."
