Description:

The paper relates that Friedrich Nietzsche is one of the great philosophers of the nineteenth century - though his name is often associated with the moral depravity of those, like Hitler, who took his views on human morality to their unfortunate extremes. This paper looks at Nietzsche's view of pity and summarizes his views on this moral value as follows: pity, in the German philosopher's mind, thwarted human progress by forcing society to indulge and show empathy towards those who constitute the bottom rungs of society (the people who hold society back, in other words); additionally, pity is a feeling that keeps human beings who have been blessed with great intellectual and constitutional gifts from true transcendence; further, pity is something used - like all Christian morality - by the lower classes of human beings to hold in abeyance (as much as they can, anyway) the mighty and powerful; finally, pity is a tragic human weakness that is life-denying and enervates the wills of those who are powerful.

Over the next several pages, this essay will look at Nietzsche's view of pity and summarize his views on this moral value as follows: pity, in the German philosopher's mind, thwarted human progress by forcing society to indulge..."
