This paper reviews the history of the concept of religious freedom. Then it reviews how this history and the political ideas of such philosophers as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke created an atmosphere leading the United States to embrace religious freedom. The paper goes on to describe what the First Amendment was originally intended to provide and then looks at how it has been incorporated today.

This paper will investigate this idea from a historical perspective as well as look at the original intent of the United States constitution. The author then investigates how this idea is presently used as well as provides an opinion concerning its application within the present society."
