Description:

The paper looks at how, beginning in the nineteenth century, a process began that sought to redefine the concepts of freedom and equality as they were understood within the United States. The paper looks at the goals of those who sought this re-definition and what was at stake for them in the process. As well, the paper looks at why documents like "The Declaration of Independence" and the US Constitution were used by, on one hand, the suffragettes who put together the "Declaration of Sentiments," and, on the other hand, by Frederick Douglass when he penned his speech, "What to the Slave is 4th of July?" The paper discusses how both women and African-Americans understood that their security and well-being were intimately linked with re-configuring the way in which Americans looked at two concepts, freedom and equality, they felt they knew already. The paper highlights how more than that, in light of the political and social implications arising from what both groups wanted, it is clear that African-American leaders and early feminists understood that they were asking for Americans to dramatically re-shape the laws, attitudes and institutions of US society.
