Miranda in "Pale Horse, Pale Rider" is at a newspaper office in America far from the fighting on World War I, while Laura in "Flowering Judas" is an American living in Mexico during the Mexican revolution in 1920. Miranda not only does not participate in the war but is a pacifist and opposed to war, while Laura is part of the political movement seeking revolution.
