From the Paper:

"The first schema that shall be addressed is that of egoism. As a meta-ethical theory of motivation, egoism asserts the descriptive claim that all of our actions can be reduced to self-interest, as determined by the statement: "Whenever people do something, it is only because they think something desirable for themselves will result from their actions."
"This claim is descriptive and open to counterexamples, which have been offered in many of the philosophies that will be described in this section. This is also a broad-reaching theory, starting with the reductionistic theme regarding all of our actions. In contrasting the psychological egoism with the psychological state of sympathy - the well-being of others becomes the motive for our action - and the final result is the assumption that only those who follow the egoism schema maintain: Only the existence and values of the self can be relied upon. (Hinman: 147) This means while egoism rests on the principles of human psychology, a number of studies in the psychology of moral development seem to suggest that an egoist behavior pattern is in fact only a first stage in actual moral development. (Ibid.)"
