This paper examines how despite ethnicity and nationhood may be linked in the public mind, in fact the two ideas are very different. According to the paper, this is quite evident in the United States, where ethnicity and a sense of national identity are often very different, a product of the melting pot idea that has shaped much of American history. This is quite evident in the United States, where ethnicity and a sense of national identity are often very different, a product of the melting pot idea that has shaped much of American history. Ethnicity is a cultural identification, while a national identification is political and geographic. National identification is also a state of mind, and while it may involve an ethnic identity as well, as would be the case in a more homogeneous country, this is not a necessity.
