According to the paper, this is quite evident in the United States, where ethnicity and a sense of national identity are often very different, a product of the melting pot idea that has shaped much of American history. This is quite evident in the United States, where ethnicity and a sense of national identity are often very different, a product of the melting pot idea that has shaped much of American history. Ethnicity is a cultural identification, while a national identification is political and geographic. National identification is also a state of mind, and while it may involve an ethnic identity as well, as would be the case in a more homogeneous country, this is not a necessity.
