"Environmental management does not stop at the loading docks of the company. Every input and output has an environmental impact, just as much as the parent company. The auto manufacturing industry is notorious for environmental destruction and pollution. In response to consumer and governmental demands, General Motors was one of the first auto manufacturers to create green initiatives. They now have one of the most stringent environmental impact reductions programs of any auto manufacturer.
"ISO 14000 is the new standard for manufacturing facilities. All manufacturers in the United States were required to be compliant by 2004 (GM, 2009). Registration required certification by a third party. To obtain registration, manufacturers had to demonstrate responsible and competent environmental management policies. While many manufactures saw these new regulations as just another thorn in their already aching heel, GM saw an opportunity to use environmental issues to leverage customer loyalty (GM, 2009).
"GM is working hard to reduce the environmental impact of their manufacturing processes and the final product that they deliver. They are currently only one step away from the introduction of a new electric car that will satisfy the needs of the consumer market (GM, 2009). GM is proactive in providing consumers access to their environmental policies and performance reports on their website (GM, 2009). This open door policy represents good public relations policy and instills public faith in their efforts."
