Description:

This paper discusses the various roles and responsibilities of an emergency department nurse. According to the paper, the ED nursing staff is responsible for assessing patients as they enter the emergency department, a critical part of nursing care. Next, the paper explores the impact of patient overcrowding in the emergency room and its impact on the delivery of quality emergency care. Then, the paper compares and contrasts the risks and responsibilities of ED nurses versus surgical nurses. The paper notes that compared to a surgical nurse the stress on an ED nurse is greater. The paper concludes by stating that it takes a very special person to manage the stress and duties of a ED nurse, since one must work in a demanding environment that poses many risks to the nurse.

ED Nursing Responsibilities and Risks as Compared to Surgical Nurses

The nurse will then be responsible for coordinating the physician's orders with the various departments: pharmacy, radiology, and the other departments like ICU, or surgery. There is a need for the nurse to be proficient and efficient in her work, because ED's are experiencing an increasing number of patient visits, and there are normally more patient's waiting to be seen than is appropriate for the size of the facility's ED..."
