Description:

The paper explores the statement that "the education of children is primarily a social responsibility" with reference to some of the most prominent thinkers on education in the history of philosophy - in particular, Plato, Aristotle and Locke - and notes that the ancient Greek philosophers' views on this statement are more reflective of our contemporary attitudes than the much more recent English philosopher John Locke. In this paper it is shown how both Plato and Aristotle, while they differed in their conceptions of the ideal state, contend that education was a public or social responsibility. In sharp contrast, Locke suggests that the education of children is a private concern as it is primarily a family or parental responsibility.
