The paper relates that as a writer and poet, Poe dealt almost exclusively with a writing style designed to shock the reader. This paper investigates the biography of Edgar Allen Poe in order to see if there is a connection between his life and these themes of horror expressed in his writings. The paper considers the evidence from Poe's childhood and suggests that Poe perhaps was not driven or haunted by ghosts from his past, but had rather simply been inspired by these earlier writers and enjoyed the genre of horror.

From the Paper:

"Poe was born to an actor and actress David Jr. and Eliza Poe, on what is presumed to be 1809. ("Edgar Allen Poe: Biography": 1998) Poe was orphaned at an early age and was eventually adopted by John and Fanny Allan. As Poe grew, he became so respectful of his adopted father that he took "Allen" as his middle name. (Allen: 1927)
"Poe had a varied school career and eventually joined the army, yet while enlisted he began working on pieces of short fiction and poetry. These pieces began as traditional short stories with no evidence of a horror theme. However, after Poe left the army and married his cousin Virginia, his works took on a dark note.
"It is uncertain as to exactly why Poe began writing horror: His childhood, while traumatic, was not abusive, nor were his teenaged and adult years harmful save that he often fought with his adopted father. ("Edgar Allen Poe": 1999) The beginnings of Poe's tendency to write horror can perhaps be traced to his marriage to Virginia, as they were reported to be deeply in love yet she soon died from tuberculosis. Poe's remorse over her death can be compared to the narrator's mourning of Lenore in the poem, "The Raven"."
