Description:

This essay examines the character of Hamlet, from William Shakespeare's play "The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark", focusing on his dualistic nature. The paper summarizes some of the scenes in the play and explains how these scenes support the description of Hamlet's dual character; a character that is at times both highly emotional and highly callous.

From the Paper:

"One of the most fascinating aspects of Shakespeare s Hamlet is the title character s duality. The idealistic young student striving to do his duty is portrayed as sensitive in some scenes, and as brutally cruel in others. The necessity of the death of Claudius need not be questioned, as both Hamlet and the audience recognize the Prince s obligation to avenge his father, but Hamlet s treatment of Ophelia is disturbing. Also troublesome is the callous handling of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Necessity may justify the action, but not the lack of emotional reaction. Yet despite these disturbing scenes, the reader sympathizes with Hamlet, and even identifies with the Prince. In Hamlet s first appearance, he is grieving over the death of his father and is shocked at the quick and incestuous marriage of his mother. In addition to the loss of his father, he must also deal with the fact that he has been robbed of his rightful position as King of Denmark. The cleverly manipulative Claudius, Hamlet s own uncle, is responsible for all of these injustices. The shocking new relationship between Queen Gertrude and her brother-in-law, which should have been appalling to the entire community, was cause enough for Hamlet s indignation."
