The paper explains that Shakespeare's "Othello" and "Measure for Measure" are two very different plays which nevertheless share in common themes of deception, trickery and false identity. The paper relates that both plays were written at approximately the same time, during a period when Shakespeare is known for his problem plays, of which "Measure for Measure" is a prime example. The paper shows how "Othello", though the better known and more frequently staged of the two plays, is more simple and straightforward in its treatment of these themes, while "Measure for Measure", a less well known work, is the more complex of the two.

"Shakespeare's "Othello" and "Measure for Measure" are two very different plays which nevertheless share in common themes of deception, trickery and false identity.
