The paper discusses how from a criminological perspective, the study of violence against women is often linked with the study of victimization (Heimer and Kruttschnitt, 2005). The paper explains that this means that in order to understand the crime and the criminal behaviour involved, we must also understand the context in which the crime takes place and the social position of the victim, including not only their gender, but their race, ethnicity and social class. The paper shows how cultural norms and social situations can make women more vulnerable to crime, especially violent crime.
