"In more directly observable terms, enormous developmental leaps and bounds are made during the first six months - infants begin to respond to sights and sounds, to recognize faces, and even begin rudimentary forms of communication such as smiling and cooing (Mayo Clinic, 2008). Motor skills also begin to develop during this period, and evidence suggests that there is a basic level of speech comprehension as well (Mayo Clinic, 2008). What is certain is that tone of voice and other emotional indicators are understood early on, and communicate a great deal to infants, who quickly develop specific responses to such signals (Mayo Clinic, 2008). Personality begins to be defined in infancy, and solidifies as development continues, involving the exterior environment as much if not more than internal neural development." Late Infancy: 7-12 months
By this period of development, most infants are acquiring the capability to grasp things in their hands, and thus effectively manipulate the world around them (Nuttall, 1995). Stimulation and the availability of things and people to play with are especially essential during this time, as with enhanced mobility and dexterity comes a natural testing of limits and boundaries."
