From the Paper:

"On October 4th, 1970 Salvador Allende was elected into power in Chile with the promise of changes in Chile's economy and social structure. Allende led the charge of the Unidad Popular (UP) to establish a strict Marxist state. Although Allende succeeded in raising the minimum wage nearly 35 percent, providing thousands of citizens with free medical supplies and care, and helping to drop unemployment from 8.9 percent to 3.9 percent during his term, general unrest amongst the previous ruling elites was prevalent (Sweeney, 2). However, in mid-1973, inflation rates skyrocketed to a staggering 238%. Consequently, breadlines, strikes and a widening distance between the left and right wing factions became irresolvable problems, and swift and decisive action was imminent (Sweeney, 4)."
