From the Paper:"Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston in 1706, one of seventeen children of Josiah and Abiah Franklin, Josiah's second wife. (His first wife died in childbirth.) Franklin did not have much schooling as a young boy, by the time he was ten he was working in his father's factory making candles and soap. In 1718, when Franklin was 12, his father apprenticed him to his brother James to learn the business of printing. "In the printing shop, as Benjamin recalled later, 'I had Access to better Books. . . . Often I sat up in my Room reading the greatest Part of the Night'" (Ketcham 32)."
