Description:

This paper relates that King Louis XIV of France is well-known for his Versailles palace, which is often read as an expression of Louis XIV's absolutist ambitions, while Kensington Palace under the rule of William and Mary of England can be read as an expression of the more moderate parliamentary monarchy system embraced by England. The paper discusses how these two residential styles of Louis XIV and William and Mary reflect that while the two ruling houses opposed each other in politics and religion, their styles of residence show similarities as well as differences in ruling styles.

From the Paper:

"King Louis XIV (1638-1715) became King of France (r. 1643-1715) in a system of monarchy which saw royal titles passed down through inheritance. Thus, he was born into his position. However, Louis XIV worked very hard to consolidate his position, claim his divine right as a ruler, and create a more efficient and absolute rule than that of his father. Indeed, Louis XIV named himself the Sun King, fought a number of wars in an attempt to dominate Europe, and expanded French culture. He clearly sought to create absolute power within his person. In his early life, two rebellions against the crown - in 1648 and 1653 - instilled in Louis XIV a deep suspicion of the nobility, and thus led him to try to consolidate the power of the crown at the expense of lesser nobles (Stockstad 778). Thus, when Louis XIV came to power he made the shocking decision to rule alone, refusing to name a first minister and choosing Jean Baptiste Colbert to advise him only on financial matters (Bernier 238)."
