"Cheramie, Inc. is a global retail chain headquartered in Atlanta, Ga. and was founded in 1992 by R.A. Cheramie. It is the 2nd largest retailer in the world and had $325 billion in sales last year. The retail industry in which Cheramie, Inc. competes is comprised "of all business activities that involve the sale of goods and services to consumers for personal, family, or household use." (SIF 16).
"Cheramie, Inc. is a discount mass merchandiser, which is a self-service store that displays and sells different kinds of merchandise at lower overall profit margins than other retailers. (Retail 6).The mission of Cheramie, Inc. is to offer quality merchandise at low prices. From 1992 to 2007, Cheramie, Inc. experienced a growth rate of 20% annually, and grew to more than 6,000 retail units in 12 countries, and employs more than 1 million associates worldwide.
"In 2005, R.A. Cheramie hired on new management in anticipation of moving on to a second career. R.A. Cheramie transitioned into a teaching career in 2006, and maintained 51% of the stock in Cheramie, Inc. Since 2007, profits at Cheramie, Inc. have been shrinking, and the stock price has seen a steady decline. As a result, R.A. Cheramie has returned to the firm and the company is now in the middle of reorganization.
"Preliminary results of our research show that Cheramie, Inc.'s employees and target market view the company as unethical. Those surveyed listed Cheramie, Inc.'s unethical labor practices and negative environmental impact as their primary concerns. In addition, more than half of the survey's respondents agreed with the following statement: "Cheramie, Inc. is a company that will do anything to cut costs without regard to external or internal consequences.""
