From the Paper:

"All Over But the Shoutin' is one of the earliest memoirs of Rick Bragg in which he describes his life with his mother as she single handedly brought up three sons. His father was an alcoholic and his mother tried to help her sons avoid the abuse he meted out in his rages as he recalled waking up and being sent to his grandmother's house. "Sometimes we left in the still dark hours of morning when he was passed out, and walked fast down the dark roads for miles, just getting away," writes Rick Bragg. "We walked until she could find a phone and call for help, and we would wait for the headlights of an uncle or aunt's car to appear, and then we knew we were safe." (Warren, 1997)
"Writing about an environment where the poor-white-trash lived he penned the drama that was a part of his everyday life. Motivated by his mother and other marginalized people he wrote of how the sacrifices the people made even when they had nothing to their name. He wrote of a Mississippi washerwoman who donated her life savings to a local university of death row inmates, serial killers and the Haitian poor. All of whom are condemned for their status and yet, have an identity of their own that is not understood."
