In this article, the writer notes that adolescent obesity represents a topic of global concern, particularly in nations where an increasingly sedentary lifestyle has led to a rise in the number of obese teens. The writer maintains that the key areas of concern are related to the dietary habits, physical activity levels, and its connection with obesity in teens. This article focuses on the 16-18 year old age group. The paper explores the major academic works within the past 15 years on the topic of teenage obesity.

From the Paper:

" The number of journal articles in the area of obesity and adolescents is overwhelming. The most important works for the scholar are those that summarize major works in this area, such as the Position Statement published by the Society for Adolescent Medicine. One of the major shifts in research was seen in the use of Body Mass Index (BMI), rather than weight as the key research criteria for the studies. BMI is more accurate in the measurement of obesity than weight, as it eliminates confounding variables such as bone structure and density. Older studies use weight as the criteria. However, a majority of the more recent studies use BMI as the measurement criteria for the research. This represents major shift in research methodology. "
