This paper looks at the issues facing adolescents today; those issues are as follows: the challenges of self-identity in a cosmopolitan, changing world; the challenges of finding one's place in the world during a period of awesome change; the challenges of coming of age in a time of economic disruption; the difficulties posed by familial fragmentation and by the alienation of an impersonal, twenty-first century world; and the adjustments to be made in a world where gender roles have become blurred. In keeping with the title of this paper, the essay is divided into three broad sections according to three broad concepts/terms - self-identity, self-concept, and self-esteem. The paper concludes that overall, the pace of change is the greatest challenge to contemporary youth.
