This paper explains that ethical theories are divided into three general subject areas: metaethics, normative ethics and applied ethics. Next, the paper indicates that abortion can be regarded both as an applied ethical issue and as a normative principle of choice that includes issues of personal benefit, harm, lawfulness, autonomy and rights. The paper concludes that the moral principles in the case of abortion yield opposite and conflicting conclusions depending on whether a person is a Pro-life or Pro-choice advocate.

From the Paper:

"The principle of personal benefit requires one to acknowledge the extent to which a given action produces positive consequences for the person in question. In this regard, in determining whether abortion is moral or not, one should assess the pros and cons of the abortion. The reasons for aborting need to be assessed. For instance, if the expectant mother cannot afford to bring up a baby at the moment, giving birth would have adverse financial impacts on her and consequently the baby will not be brought up in a suitable way The principle of harm requires that we should not harm others."
