On the other side, there are those that argue that video games do not cause any harm to children at all. From the Paper:
"There are two sides to the violent video game controversy. On one side, there are those that argue that all video games are bad for children, especially violent video games. On the other side, there are those that argue that video games do not cause any harm to children at all. Results of research indicate that violence in video games can be very negative. Children can actually exhibit violent behaviors when they repeatedly play these games. The results are behavioral problems that they exhibit in school, at home and in social activities. Other research indicates that prosocial/neutral video games, in contrast to violent games, have positive effects on children and teenagers."In the 1970s, video games were introduced and quickly became a favorite leisure activity for many children and teenagers. With this explosion, came concerns from parents about the adverse effects of watching these games, particularly violent ones. Their concern was warranted, because some research indicated that about 90% of U.S.Children from ages eightto 17 play video games usually show more aggression after playing a violent video game (Barlett, 2009; Saleem, Anderson, & Gentile, 2012).Playing violent video games was considered much worse than watching a violent TV show because when people watch television they are only passively observing, while in video games, they are actively involved. Children experience, when actively participating in the game, the same feeling that they would in real life, which is why when children participate in these games, it becomes more likely for them to mimic what they experienced in the game in real life(Anderson & Bushman, 2001;Funk, Buchman&Germann, 2000).
"The video games that cause the most aggression are games ratedwith M for mature. The first violent games were DOOM, Mortal Combat, and Death Race. Butthe most violent one of all time is Grand Theft Auto (the whole series). Grand Theft Auto is violent because of its use of coarse language and adult content. In 1982, Ronnie Lamm. aformer Long Island PTA president, was fighting video games in arcades through legislation that banned arcades from being a certain distance from schools and limiting the time when children could be inside arcades playing video games. During this time, opponents of video games believed that the games offered nothing constructive for children. However, by 2001, Surgeon General David Satcher conducted a study that determined that violent video games have little impact on violence in children (Gonzalez, 2012; Hollingdale&Greitemeyer, 2014). Both of these high profile cases show how different opinions on video games can be. Since many video games include some types of violent acts, it is important to determine what kind of effect this violence is having on children, if any."
