Description:
"Memories, like the corners of my mind, misty water colored memories, of the way we were" (Bergman, Bergman & Hamlisch, 1973), these lyrics sung by Barbara Streisand in the movie "The Way We Were" always remind me of fond and sometimes sad memories in my life. Wouldn't it be just awful if we did not possess the ability to remember special moments in our lives? Thank goodness we are able to process memories and recall them. The memory process is quite special and unique, these processes work together to make us who we are, memory is essential to our lives. Without a memory of the past we would not be able to navigate the present or future. We would not remember what happened yesterday, what we are doing now or tomorrow, without memory we could not learn anything! Memory is vital to our lives.

We would not remember what happened yesterday, what we are doing now or tomorrow, without memory we could not learn anything! Memory is vital to our lives."Memory is the ability to store things in our mind and then be able to recall them. We encounter massive amounts of information each and every day in the form of images, sounds and meanings that must be processed. There are three very distinct processes involved in memory - encoding, storage and retrieval. It is during the encoding process of memory that sights, sounds and meaning are transformed or changed into useable information so that it can be stored in either our sensory, short term or long term memory.
"When I look up a new phone number or an email address that is considered a visual or sight encoded memory but if I repeat the information to myself or say it out loud that is sound encoding the information. This encoding is even further reinforced when we repeat over and over or rehearse the information to hold it in our short term memory. When I look up a recipe on my computer and remember the 6 or 7 ingredients after repeating them over and over while I get them out to start cooking is an example of short term memory, the ability to hold chunks of information that can be quickly recalled at that moment then easily forgotten."
