Description:

This paper examines various aspects of Asperger's Syndrome, focusing on symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. First, the paper gives DSM-IV's definition of autism. Then, the paper discusses the causes of autism. This is followed by a case study of a six year old boy who has autism, describing his behavior and social interactions at home and at school. Next, the paper introduces multiaxial assessment as a tool for practitioners in diagnosing autism. The paper applies it to the case study that was presented. Finally, the paper addresses treating clients with Asperger's Syndrome, particularly using narrative therapy. The paper concludes by stating that Asperger's is a manageable disorder, and with the proper therapy the individual can function successfully in school and society.

From the Paper:

"The Diagnostic and Statistical Manuel for Mental Disorders IV-TR (DMS-IV-TR) has autism listed under pervasive developmental disorders with a diagnostic code 299.00. In order for a client to be diagnosed with autism they must meet six criteria that fall under three different categories; social interaction, communication, and repetitive patterns of behavior. With such a prevalence of the disorder, many researchers have been trying to gain a better understanding about the disorder and what causes it.
"A lot of people are concerned with wanting to know what causes autism. When it comes to abnormal behavior one of the methods of evaluating the cause of a particular behavior is the biological approach. The biological approach to explaining abnormality takes into consideration dysfunctions in the brain, chemical imbalances, and abnormalities to a persons DNA, and then provides some biologically driven solutions to working with biological abnormalities. Another approach that is used to help explain abnormal behavior is the psychological approach. This approach has subcategories that give their own variation..."
