VIDEO GAMES term papers and essays

Video games are interactive computer programs that are used for enjoyment. The very first video game consoles were connected to and played on a television screen. These appeared popularly in the early 1970's, though, of course, there were primitive predecessors. Coin operated video games soon appeared in arcades. By 1977, the first handheld video games arrived, followed by computer and internet games when the Personal Computer became a household staple. As video game formats grew, so did the variety of games. Early video games were sports related, such as Pong, a primitive tennis game, or involved destroying objects by shooting them, such as Asteroids, Galaga, and Centipede. Later virtual reality games arrived on the scene, that allow the gamer to participate with role-playing in virtual worlds. As games proliferated and developed, a video gaming culture developed with them. While there is a stereotypical view of the video game enthusiast as the male super-enthusiast who reads video game reviews and buys "cheat" magazines, video game use is incredibly wide spread, due especially to computer games and games on cellphones and personal devices. The average gamer is 37 years old, and is a female almost as often as a male, though game style preferences do vary according to gender.
