Teenage mothers tend to have higher rates of medical problems than their older counterparts, including preterm delivery, lower birth weights and anemia. Many young mothers come from low socio-economic backgrounds and therefore do not have access to good healthcare or insurance. This lack of good pre-natal care leads to higher risks of problems during and after the pregnancy, both for the mother and the child. Teenage pregnancy impacts the mother in other ways. Psychological factors such as stress and the inability to cope need to be addressed through support by family members and the community. Teenage mothers generally lose out on education as they leave school to care for their children. Governments have measures in place in an attempt to prevent teenage pregnancies, including comprehensive sex education and the encouragement of open dialogue.
