GENDER term papers and essays

Gender defines those characteristics that are associated with an individual being a male or female. A person's gender determines what is expected and valued in a male or female within a given context and the term itself is part of a broader socio-cultural context. Gender is also defined as the relations between men and women - perceptually and materially. Gender is a socially constructed concept (compared to a person's sex which refers to biological characteristics). According to the WHO, while people are born either male or female, they learn to be boys and girls who grow into men and women. These learned behaviors make up the individual's gender identity and determines their gender roles. Gender identity can be defined by socialization in childhood, interaction with parents and other family members, family roles and peer pressure during adolescence. These 'gender roles' are frequently translated into economic policies and international gender policies are continually upgraded. Nevertheless, gender inequality persists and affects women's capacity to benefit from economic global trade policies. Gender studies traditionally focus on women and on the relationship between men and women, and gender norms refer to specific rights and responsibilities assigned to men and women.
