Divorce is the term given to the termination of a marriage, where all responsibilities of matrimony and legal duties are terminated, in most cases by a court or other legal authority. The vast majority of countries allow for divorce, barring the Vatican City and the Philippines. Divorce records show that more and more couples in the world are choosing to end their relationships through divorce, with many issues involved, including spousal support, child support and custody, as well as the distribution of property. A country's divorce rate is measured roughly by the number of divorces per 1000 population, and these rates have increased markedly since the twentieth century. Causes of divorce include adultery and infidelity, domestic violence, addictions and midlife crisis. Many divorces are defined by a person's religious affiliation, and the process is usually then administered by religious courts. Divorce laws differ from country to country, with most Western countries adopting 'no-fault' statutes which do not require a party to assert fault on their partner to lead to the dissolution of marriage. Factors such as adultery and abandonment may, however, affect how the courts divide property, child support and custody. Types of divorce include no fault divorce, at-fault divorce, uncontested divorce and collaborative divorce.
