CRIME term papers and essays

Crime is an act of commission or omission that goes against the civil or moral codes established by a society. In order for state entities to define crime and punishment for those crimes, there must be a standard acceptable to a vast majority of the public. For this reason laws are established within governments as a code by which citizens must abide to remain legal. Thus, any citizen disobeying these laws would be guilty of committing a crime. The laws in question should adhere to public morals and promote the general welfare of the people. Often laws are made that promote the interest of the ruling government, such as tax laws. Crimes vary by degree and should be punished accordingly. Violent crimes and sexual crimes often warrant a greater degree of punishment than those crimes that cause less damage to a human being, such as littering or vagrancy. One of the key roles of government is to exercise justice. Morals require that the oppressed or hurt be delivered and vindicated. The popularity of crime stories in books, news outlets, television shows and movies testifies to the degree of pleasure that people receive from seeing justice carried out.
