CHILD DEVELOPMENT term papers and essays

Child development refers to the study of the ways human beings develop physically, mentally and emotionally from birth to the end of adolescence. Since some aspects of development are affected by genetics, genetics and prenatal studies are also included in the field of child development. Study in this field will include many different child development theories, which individuals will tend to adopt in various combinations. Examples of these theories include the Piaget Theory which states that children learn through play and as parents and teachers guide them along with Socratic questioning. The Vygotsky theory is like the Piaget Theory, but emphasizes the parents' intervention in the child's learning of a new skill, such as when the parent will move a child's hand and wave it "bye-bye" until the child learns to perform this social activity for himself. Another theory studied in child development is the Attachment Theory which asserts the critical importance of an infant being intimately cared for and nurtured by at least one individual. The theory states that children who do not form these initial attachments will not develop proper social and emotional functioning. Careers in child development programs can include working in pre-school and day-care facilities, teaching in public and private schools, working with children through social services, or working in community or religious centers. Requirements for child development permits vary from state to state and also have varying educational and licensure requisites according to the nature of the sought after job.
