This paper traces the history of enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions in light of IT implementations. According to the paper, originally it was believed that ERP solutions would resolve a host problems and challenges related to enterprise-wide operations. As scores of organizations soon discovered, however, ERP solutions are no panacea or silver bullet. In practical terms, IT solutions are simply not a substitute for fundamental and proper supply chain management principles. In light of these conclusions, the following discussion suggests that as organizations move into the 21st century, the value of supply chain management core disciplines must become a stern recognition.
