From the Paper:

"The history of American education may be broken down into five distinct periods. The first of these is the Colonial Period, which took place during the colonization of the country prior to the war for independence, during the years 1600-1776. Following this came the Early National Period of American education, which encompassed the years of 1776-1840. Following this was the Common School Period, taking place during 1840-1880. The next period was that of the Progressive period, from 1880-1920, with the fifth and final period in American Education History being that of the Modern Period, which began in 1920 and continues today. (Barger) Each of these periods had a particular event or development which was of particular import to the development of education in the country, with a number of individuals being important throughout each period, however one from each will be presented."
