This paper describes the work carried out by the APSCA which was set up to protect animals. It describes the wide range of programs and initiatives carried out by the organization to combat the problem of animal cruelty. It runs shelters for lost or mistreated animals and publishes its positions regarding pet welfare widely.
From the Paper:''The organization has a wide range of programs and initiatives to combat this problem. The ASPCA provides many resources such as the Animal Poison Control Center; the ASPCA Animal Behavior Center; the Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital; a fleet of mobile spay/neuter clinics in New York; and pet loss support services for the grieving. The ASPCA supports an initiative called Mission Orange, which seeks to prevent the euthanasia of adoptable pets.
''They partner with agencies on disaster readiness, so that animals are looked after in times of emergency. The ASPCA, for example, was involved in animal rescue operations in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The ASPCA runs shelters, such as their flagship shelter in New York City. The organization began to help New York's working horses, and they still have a special Equine Fun to help at-risk horses.
''The ASPCA is also the only charity that is allowed to enforce animal cruelty statutes. They have a Humane Law Enforcement division that allows them to investigate cases of animal cruelty and bring offenders to justice. Additionally, the ASPCA has educational programs to work with law enforcement about animal rights issues.''
