From the Paper:

"Abuse can take many forms with a vulnerable population like the elderly. This can include physical, psychological as well as social or cultural abuse. "Elder abuse includes physical, emotional, psychological or sexual abuse as well as financial or material exploitation, neglect, and abandonment" (Facts About Elder Abuse in the United States)
"While there is a general perception that the elderly are much better off than in the past or in previous historical periods, research reveals that in many instances the elderly are still a very vulnerable population group. On the one hand there have been improvements for the elderly in terms of medical research, general healthcare and access to amenities. On the other hand, it is also true that the elderly in countries like the United States and Canada are still vulnerable in many respects.
"These vulnerabilities make them more susceptible to various forms of abuse. The elderly are, for instance, easier targets for criminals and other forms of physical and mental abuse. Senescence or old age is understood as a progressive functional decline in the individual or as "...a gradual deterioration of physiological function with age ... and increase in vulnerability" (What Is Aging? Definitions and Concepts in Gerontology)."
