Abstract This paper explains that the pasdedeux section in Balanchine's ballet ?Agon? is a sculptural representation of a relationship, expressing only aspects of reality in the dance. The author believes through absurdity and grandeur the pasdedeux of Balanchine's ?Agon? creates the virtual emotions of a conflicted relationship.The author describes and interprets each part of the pasdedeux.
From the Paper "The pas de deux begins with a series of relatively quick steps performed by both dancers, with the female being one full count ahead of the male. This creates the strong impression that the female is leading the male, and establishes her dominance in the dance from the opening. This is unusual in ballet, where the classical pas de deux is performed with the male leading and the female following. The slightly frenetic opening ends in a pose that is repeated later, with the man above the woman, her leg up in an extreme, attitude arabesque that wraps about his head. This pose is remarkable for the extremity of the movement, and its visual illusion of the woman trapping the man with her bent leg. Abstract On 13 September 1923, General Miguel Primo de Rivera launched a successful and bloodless coup d'etat, beginning seven years of dictatorship in Spain. Primo de Rivera was a maladroit politician filled with the fervor of Spanish patriotism thought sufficient to navigate his dictatorship through the murky waters of politics. This paper will argue that the regime was more of a developmental dictatorship than one based in the usual fundamentals of autocracy. It concerns itself instead with describing the political realities in which the Primo de Rivera dictatorship was based, before moving on to discuss the objectives and achievements of the regime. The paper concludes by suggesting ways in which the dictatorship may have influenced the cataclysmic developments that drew the nation into Civil War less than a decade after the collapse of the Primo de Rivera regime.

Abstract Research centering on Alcide de Gasperi centers primarily upon secondary accounts of historical record in which the political decisions, speeches, and records are maintained. De Gasperi formed a new government coalition in consequence of his attitude in interior and foreign policy. Alcide de Gasperi oversaw Italy's entry into the Cold War. Within Italy, Gasperi was forced to deal with a polarized nation. The Christian Democrats were forced to change Italy into an actively Western state. Gasperi is credited with bringing Italy into the fold of Western capitalism and Democracy.

Abstract This paper examines the life of Diane de Poitiers, the mistress of the sixteenth century French king, Henry II. The author notes that Diane de Poitiers emerged as a power in the French court of King Henry II because of her beauty, great insight, and political astuteness, and used them skillfully to forge an ever stronger relationship with the King. As the years passed she acquired so much influence that she became the queen of France in all but name, was the brains behind the throne, and was even placed in charge of educating the royal children of Henry and Catherine.

Abstract In early-April 2000, HSBC Holdings PLC agreed to acquire a majority holding in Credit Commercial de France (CCF). The proposed merger of the two banking firms is analyzed in this paper. The analysis focuses on strategic choices made by HSBC in developing its acquisition strategy, motivations by both firms for the merger, a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis of the proposed merger, analysis of the proposed merger within the context of Porter's Five-Forces Model of Competitiveness and challenges that will be faced by HSBC in relation to differences in corporate cultures should the merger be completed.

CCF, a successful but medium-sized company, has been a takeover target for larger financial institutions in Europe for more than a year. The suitors and their proposals, however, were not attractive to CCF management. Abstract This paper introduces, summarizes, and reviews Jeff Rothstein's journal article, "Is Handling Client Resistance A PasDeDeux?". The paper discusses Rothstein's approach to how counselors, therapist,s and even teachers should handle an individual's resistance during the helping skills process and asserts that Rothstein's approach would be useful in a classroom and a social worker's office, as well as a psychoanalyst's couch.
From the Paper "How should resistance be viewed, upon the part of the individual counselor or a teacher during the helping skill process? First and foremost, according to Jeff Rothstein, LCSW, the act of resistance should not be resisted on the part of the counselor. He states that ?to me, resistance is a sign you are getting somewhere,? that is you, the counselor, teacher or therapist. This means that resistance upon the part of all helping individuals "should be responded to as a speed bump rather than a stop sign. To shut down or resist" the queries of the therapist or counselor ?may be an adaptive attempt by the client to maintain a sense of control over their circumstances,? a sense of control that ultimately is merely a reinforcement of ineffectual life strategies that they are actively seeking help from the counselor to alleviate. Abstract This paper states that Jeff Rothstein, LCSW, believes that the act of resistance should not be resisted on the part of the counselor because it is a sign the counselor is getting somewhere. The author points out that Rothstein reiterates the common Freudian trope that analysts and therapists should not remain in the patient's or learner's comfort zone, but rather, for the sake of the patient, poke at the discomforting contradictions and fissures, which exist within the patient's consciousness and way of relating to the world. The paper stresses that resistance means a fighting back, and the counselor or instructor may get emotionally hurt in the process.
