This paper explains that, for years, experts have tried to determine if alcoholism is caused by medical roots, mental health issues or emotional problems. The author points out that studies have uncovered evidence for all three elements as the foundation of this disease; therefore, the only logical conclusion is that, while there is a definite genetic base to the disorder, mental health and emotional issues can create the environment for it to take hold. The paper stress that the many consequences of alcoholism, including financial issues, drinking and driving and associated illnesses, put a heavy burden on society.

"The study indicated that some onset alcoholics were thrust in that direction following the death or divorce of a spouse. The study cannot determine if the spouse's presence simply held the alcoholic at bay so that he could not drink heavily until she was gone or if the actual alcoholism did not begin until that life event happened. In addition emotional issues including insecurities, poor self esteem and being deprived of love by one's parents may all be contributing factors to the development of alcoholism for the purpose of providing false bravado or confidence."
