"Many companies look to automate the time-consuming task of providing order status over the telephone or even via fax to their customers. Order status is by far the most time-consuming task there is in the context of an order management workflow. Order capture across multiple channels and the integration to a centralized ERP system is also critical, and in one study by Askegar and Columbus (2002) Best Practices in Channel Management was exemplified by companies capable of delivering consistent order status, order capture, and order management across all channels. For GE Lighting this translated into the need to deliver order status to global resellers, partners and members of the direct sales force, and also provide a single version of the truth when it came to order management and fulfillment."
