Numerous studies in this field resulted in the systematized discipline of crystals as it is known today. Following these developments, "crystallography" evolved from "the scientific study of crystals" to "the experimental science of determining the arrangement of atoms in solids." This evolution to cover all possible atomic arrangement was inevitable especially with the discovery of solids that cannot be confined within the conventional definition of a crystal."
