"Mezirow's Reframing, Newman, and My Experience Mezirow (2000) bases his theory on two statements from the philosopher Socrates. The first is that "An unexamined life is not worth living", and the second statement is "Know thyself" (King, 2002, p. 111). The concept of the unexamined life is taken by Mezirow (2000) to refer to the untransformed life, while knowing oneself refers to the need for critical self-reflection. Transformation theory uses those ideas as well as the concept of puzzles for connecting pieces in a set frame to demonstrate "how we learn to negotiate and act on our own purposes, values, feelings and meanings rather than those we have uncritically assimilated from others" (King, 2002, p. 111)."
