The paper relates that child mortality doubled through the 1980s, life expectancy is now much lower and residents face pollution, hazardous wastes, increasing violence plus usual problems of poverty."

As this book argues, throughout, being poor in the United States involves subjecting oneself to significant environmental and health risks. The approaches of medical sociology help to give a dimension to this book that separates it from ever so many works to argue that 'poverty is bad', or 'the environment should be cleaner'."
