Paper Summary:
The paper explains how the condition of hyperlexia affects a child's language development, language learning, language listening, language comprehension and language usage. The paper further relates that not all parents, teachers and medical professionals even recognize the condition of hyperlexia, which can mask itself as academic giftedness. The paper points out, however, that it is important for those individuals working with hyperlexic children to be informed about this condition so that they will be better able to design and implement learning strategies and techniques that could help to decrease language deficits.

Summary
From the Paper:
"Clearly, having the condition of hyperlexia affects a child's language development, in terms of learning, listening, comprehending, and sometimes in various other ways (Osterling, 1996). According to the article What is Hyperlexia? (2005), it is, therefore, important that this condition be properly diagnosed, and its symptoms recognized as early on as possible. In dealing with hyperlexic children, moreover, parents, teachers, medical professionals, and others, should strive to understand, as well as possible based on available research, the common ways in which hyperlexic children process language, and in which they learn, in order to best be able to recognize such children's strengths and weaknesses in visual processing and reading (Richman, 1997; What is Hyperlexia?, 2005; Richman, n.d.). According to Kovach (2005), Hyperlexia is too often confused with autism, but should, instead, be considered a "stand alone" syndrome. Other authors, however (e.g., Hyperlexia, 2005; What is Hyperlexia, 2005), disagree."
