Paper Summary:
This paper compares the early to mid-18th centuries in France and England, particularly Paris and London, drawing upon the similarities in prevailing social conditions and actions necessitated by history. The author examines how one country moved on to revolutionize how we see the economy while the other was in a struggle to establish its identity as a land of its people.
From the Paper:
"The age of Enlightenment took Europe by storm in the 18th century. These times were-history perched on the cusps of huge transitions. England, with its relatively stable division of powers between the monarchy and Parliament, on the heels of the Magna Carta (and past the ravages of a civil war), stood on the verge of sweeping reforms brought on by the Industrial Revolution. In France, however, the Age of Enlightenment brought on a school of social thought that would, towards the end of the century, overthrow the monarchy and deliver to its people a nation espousing the principles of "Libert?, Egalit?, Fraternit?.Enlightenment translates to Intellectualism. The great British philosophers John Locke, David Hume, Adam Smith and Edward Gibbons, and the French philosophers like Montesquieu, Voltaire, Racine, and Rosseau, though often at odds with each other, nevertheless, presented a framework for reason. In their opinion: the Middle Ages were replete with victimization, autonomies, religious and philosophical prejudices. There was a singular lack of the quest for knowledge and reason. This new age of Enlightenment would dispel the darkness of the past: Illuminism by the Illuminati."
